God is proceeding, or going on, continuing as indicated by the names in scripture given for Him. The sense of this proceeding is of His will in His very nature, and not a certain accidental of Him. The pure act of God proceeds the Word and this is the Word of God; is then eternally begotten, proceeding in the sense of generation. Simply, since God is act, His generation of the Son, which is the Word, is eternal. Further, as the Word is proceeding from God, so are acts of love, life, and will, and this is the Spirit. The spirit is a procession.

The Divine mind is similar to that of the human mind in process. The Divine mine knows by begetting eternally which is generation, while love and will are acts which are processions. These are the limits of the proceedings of the mind, that is, there are no other proceedings.

To study the Summa Theologiae, I highly suggest doing so with Verbum from Logos bible software. Verbum is a state-of-the-art library that connects thousands of resources so that you can study a subject with layers of depth, analysis, and understanding. If you’re new to the Summa, you really need companion material and it’s all available in the Verbum package. For example, each Question and Article in the Summa sources several other documents of the Magisterium, other philosophers, Church Fathers, etc., – and Verbum connects them all, so that in one click, you can explore and connect the Tradition of the Church easily and scholarly. I use Verbum everyday, no exaggeration, it’s that important to me. Learn more about Verbum here.
