The United Nations is attempting to bring the Vatican, rather the Catholic Church, to task for its “position” on abortion, among other things. In order to end child abuse, poverty, and other hardships children around the world endure, the U.N. is suggesting that the Vatican amend the Canon Law pertaining to abortion. In its recent correspondence with the Vatican, the UN states:
55. The [UN] Committee urges the Holy See to review its position on abortion which places obvious risks on the life and health of pregnant girls and to amend Canon 1398 relating to abortion with a view to identifying circumstances under which access to abortion services can be permitted.”
If it were only that simple. What the UN doesn’t understand is that the Vatican, the political body representing the Catholic Church, does not have the authority to change her “position” on abortion. It’s not even a position, really. The Church has a teaching body, which is referred to as the Magisterium. The Magisterium is not the bartender of moral theology; they don’t simple concoct any “position” on an issue which suits their current popular consensus. The Magisterium is the servant of the scriptures and the divine revelation. The purpose of the Magisterium is to communicate the truth of God.
The moral doctrine communicated by the Church is not a series of decrees that comes from a throne only through the faculty of a group of arbitrating men. It is the correct communication of the acts that perfect the human soul and by this the Church has been given Christ’s own authority and protection to never preach a word contrary to that end. So, misters and misses of those who request that the Catholic Church and the authorities at the Vatican simply pen and quill a different “position”, have you an idea what the Church really is? It is not a man made body of ideologies like the UN. It cannot change its teachings, and will stand firm until the end of time as the guarantor and protector of such truths.
